Naar oppervlakte is Californië de op twee na grootste staat van de VS en naar bevolking zelfs de grootste. De staat – bakermat van de Noord-Amerikaanse wijnbouw – is uitgegroeid tot de op drie na grootste wijnproducent van de wereld. Het zwaartepunt van de Californische wijnbouw is te vinden in de omgeving van San Francisco, waar binnen het vrij warme klimaat verkoelende lucht van zee een belangrijke kwaliteitsfactor is.
